Guilford Medical & Dental Managers POST OFFICE BOX 4286 GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA 27404-4286 SEPTEMBER 1991 HELP YOUR PATIENTS STOP SMOKING At the July Guilford Medical and Dental Managers meeling, Dr. Chris Guest, trom Urgent Medical Care Center, gave a talk on a program called "How To Help Your Patients Stop Smoking." This program, developed by The National Cancer Institute (NHI), can be a value-added service for your practice. The program comes in a colorful manual designed to help physicians create a smoking cessation program that operates smoothly and effectively, based on methods proven in clinical trials. The smoking cessation manual for physicians is the product of five years of work to prevent cancer. A major component of the research program are studies to establish effective smoking cessation techniques for physicians to use with their smoking patients. Other components are studying the use of mass medical, schoolcurricula,"self-help"pro- grams and strategies for high risk populations. An appreciation of the unique ability of physicians to advise and influence their patients to stop smoking prompted the NCI to support five randomized, controlled clinical trials to test a variety of physician-delivered smoking cessation techniques. These trials, conducted by distinguished investigators in the field of smoking control, have involved more than 700 physicians and 40,000 patient subjects. There is now sufficient data from these trials to recommend the most effective (cant, on page 8} GMDM SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED Pictured left to right: L Rose Dunlap, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, presented the following Medical and Dental Scholarships, totaling $5,000 at the August meeting.
