Klan
rally
, at
which
five
members
of the
Communist
Workers
Party
(CWP)
were
shot
to
death
.
Cavin
notes
his
surprise
at how
quickly
the
situation
escalated
into
violence
and at how
no
one
seemed
to be
looking
for
cover
when
the
shooting
began
. He
describes
the
KKK
gunfire
as "
relentless
" and
recounts
that
CWP
leader
Nelson
Johnson
eventually
took
refuge
behind
the
same
car
as he
did
. He also
describes
the
police
as "
conspicuously
absent
"
until
about
two
minutes
after
the
shooting
stopped
.
