Dear GJF Donor,
While America watches the Democratic Convention farce
being played out in New York, two of the Greensboro widows
have been gagged and jailed in Greensboro, North Carolina.
As Judge Long instructed the all-white jury at the opening
session of the Klan-Nazi trial, Marty Nathan and Floris
Cauce spoke out courageously against the travesty of justice being enacted in the courtroom.
When the judge instructed the jurors to evaluate the
evidence impartially, Dr. Marty Nathan, widow of Communist
Workers Party member Dr. Mike Nathan, stood up and
addressed the crowded courtroom:
"There is no impartiality in this capitalist court.
The U.S. government conspired with the Klan and Nazis
to kill my husband. This court is a sham, the real
criminals are not being brought to trial here. It is
the government that killed ray husband and the CWP 5.
The government is using this trial to bring in fascism."
Four baliffs jumped Marty and gagged her as the jury was
hurriedly ushered out of the courtroom. Still trying to
shout through her gag, Marty was dragged before Judge
Long, who warned that she was in contempt of court. He
had her gags removed and asked for a statement in her
defense.
Marty's response was uncompromising, "There is no .justice
in this court. The real murderers go free! I cannot
keep quiet while the government takes the American people
to fascism and world war."
The judge ordered the gag back on and sentenced Marty to
30 days in jail. She was removed from the courtroom and
the jury was returned to its place. Continuing his
instructions, Judge Long then asked the jurors to remain
"unbiased" as they performed this "highest duty of citizenship" .
Floris Cauce, widow of Cesar Cauce, immediately jumped up
and pointing her finger directly at the judge shouted,
"There is no justice in this courtroom. All the jurors
