UNC-G Student Sit-in
Continues Peacefully
A student sit-in the Administrate Building at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro continued throughout
Thursday in protest of action by
the student government senate
cutting off funds to an all-black
student organization on campus.
Approximately 75 to 100 students at a time took part in the
sit-in Thursday. The sit-ins lasted from about 8 a.m. until 5
p.m. when the students left voluntarily. Offices in the building
normally close at 5 p.m.
A UNC-G spokesman said the
students participating were
again orderly and peaceful as
has been the case each day
since the sit-ins started on Tuesday.
MEANWHILE* a 'five-member
faculty committee appointed by
Chancellor James S. Ferguson
continued its inquiry into the
issue throughout the day. The
committee heard witnesses from
both sides of the controversy.
The dispute involves the Neo
Black Society (NBS), a student
group which has about 145 active members. The student senate voted Monday night to cut
off funding to the organization.
The NBS had been allocated a
total of $3,570 from student fees
during the current semester.
The action came after charges
that membership in the NBS is
limited to black students. This
charge was denied by a spokesman for NBS during the hearing
which preceded the Senate action.
The NBS appealed the Senate's action to Chancellor Ferguson, and he in turn appointed
a biracial faculty committee to
hear the appeal and serve as an
advisory committee to him.
