[Memo from J. Clay Madison to members of the Commission on Religion and Race]

              TO:  The Members of the Commission on Religion and Race
In my opinion the setting up of this Commission was one of the more
significant actions of the recent Annual Conference,  This Conference
has a unique opportunity to demonstrate to the whole Church that
black and white people can work together harmoniously and creatively
in Christian Fellowship.  As I see it, it is the responsibility of
this commission to help our conference develop this opportunity to its
fullest.
You have another important responsibility, that is to lead our
Conference in the raising of $75,000,00 this year over and above the
regular conference apportionments for Bennett College. This can be
done as educational specials underwritten by the Race Relations Day
offering.  Perhaps no financial goal for this year is more important
than this one.
May I assure you that the entire Program Council Staff wants to
be helpful to you and the conference in this area of work in every
way possible.
