Mr. William Friday, President
University of North Carolina
Chapel Hill, North Carolina - 27514
Dear Mr. Friday:
Thank you for your letter relative to my having voiced my views with
force and clarity, which you respect.
I have no desire to meet with you and Chancellor Ferguson in a joint
conference. I did not even attend the joint conference at U. N. C. - G.
and most assuredly I would not wish to put busy men like you to the
trouble of holding a joint conference with me. If you would care to write
a letter to the Governor and voice your views with force and clarity and
send me a copy as I did you, it might tend to definitize your views
better than would a joint conference.
I see that Lt. Governor Scott has similar views as I do concerning the
hiring of Howard Fuller as a lecturer at Chapel Hill and the holding of
a "Black Power Forum" at U. N. C. - G.
I am enclosing to you some clippings from the Greensboro Papers which
tend to show that I am not alone in my views.
I see in the morning paper that Chancellor Ferguson has stated that the
Black Power Form was an Educational Experience. If Chancellor Ferguson
needs some Educational Experience, he should go to school in Russia or
at other Black Power Forums to receive such an experience and not hold
such a Forum at a University of North Carolina, which is supported by the
tax-payers of North Carolina.
Also, Clarence Shipman, Dean of Men at UV N. C., says, Black Power is
definitely a reality. It may be with Mr. Shipman but it certainly is
not with the tax-payers of North Carolina.
According to the Press, Black Power said that no black power boys should
be fighting in Vietnam. We, Black power, can start our own Vietnam in this
country and keep them busy. Is this why Howard Fuller, Rat Brown, Cassius
Clay, Carmichael and Martin Luther King are not in Vietnam to-day, along
with many of our own American Boys.
