MINUTES 12 Noon October 28, 1981 Trevi Fountain Restaurant Persons Attending: B. J. Battle, L. Brandon, E. Brisbon, E. and B. Burrows, W. Clapp, C. Coleman, C. Davis, N. & J. Johnson, S. Nelson, A. Welsh, and E. Whitfield. The meeting was convened by Mr. Charles Davis who called for a summation and impressions of the'Forum on Perspectives on Federal Investigation of November 3rd, 1979/which was held at the Guilford County Courthouse on Monday night, October 27th. Mr. Davis led the discussion, indicating that the meeting was very useful for him in that it provided a "stamp of approval" from recognized legal experts that there are in fact grounds for federal prosecution of those responsible for the murders of November 3rd. This will strengthen him he said in his interaction with others in the community who might hold doubts about the incident. There was general agreement that this "stamp of approval" was a significant accomplishment of the forum. Lewis Brandon drew out that another major point about the forum was the tremendous response from people. About 200 people attended. He pointed out that this reflects the widespread interest in the Greensboro community for seeing that justice is done about the November 3rd murders and other matters in the community. There was also agreement on this point. Others added that the make-up of the audience for the forum was also very broad, with both young and old, black and white, etc. There was some brief discussion about how to make the general community conscious of the findings of the forum. Anne Welsh suggested that we try to have the tapes of the forum transcribed, especially Van Alstyne's. Joyce Johnson suggested that the sponsors of the forum and others should appear on talk shows, write articles, send out mailings, etc. to propagate the points brought out at the forum. She added that the positive response from the community should also be propagated. No definitive action was taken on these suggestions since no transcriber is readily available. Beth Burrows suggested later that the findings of the Conyers Hearings also be distributed. Mr Davis stressed that our task now is to define the appropriate form or forms to further tap the desire for federal investigation which was expressed at the forum. A written summary of the forum is just one method. He asked for others. Lewis Brandon suggested that an invitation should be extended to Julian Bond to return to the community. His visit would have two main purposes: a) to share the findings of his committee with the larger community, and b) to rally broader support in our community for federal investigation. After brief discussion the group agreed to the following plan: a) Julian Bond will be asked to re-visit for a mass meeting on November 22, 1981,for the two-fold purpose outlined. b) He will be invited by a broad group of community organizations and individuals, who will personally sign the invitational letter. A draft letter will be prepared by Anne Welsh and distributed by Charles Davis for approval and signatures. Prior to receiving a copy of the draft invitational letter each organization and individual being requested to sign the letter will be contacted The general plan agreed upon by us will be presented to him or her. This will give both clarity and speed to this process.
