Bear Bill;
Thank you for your letter of March 19 in response to aay memorandum
concerning the recent situation with Black students on the Guilford
campus. Flease let me respond to some of your specific comments:
1. We will plan to Maintain a general type of observation
over the rooms In Cox Hall which we have allocated for
their use* Me are* of courses very much concerned to
see that good conduct is maintained,
2, Concerning the use of automobiles by the Black students*
Our general policy is that any formally established gnuup
may schedule and use Guilford automobiles when they ar@
available. This applies, for instance* to the Biophile
Club, to various departmental trips, to Richardson
Scholars, etc. The automobiles will not be used by
individuals unless the individuals are on sons type of
official business. Each of the groups who use the cars
pay the established college charge for this. This policy,
thereforef is not a concession to the Hack students*
3* Concerning the "minimum grade o£CC,f* I have been Misinterpreted if you feel that 1 have tried to justify this request
in say original cosaaunication* What I attempted to do was to
give you the reasons that they gave for their request* We do
not feel that simply being a good citizen and behaving in a
nannsrly fashion justified any type of academic credit, but
what wm have felt is that there are a number of educational
experiences which can Justify such credit* As you know*
academic credit is earned by a nusfeerr of the o£f~caxapus
study groups, also by students (particularly in the Richardson
Ppogran) who serve as internees in certain of our local
industries and social welfare agencies, etc* Me have felt
that th@s# have b«en learning experiences which have considerably deep^nid the students understanding and, therefore,
are worthy of a Halted aaount of academic credit* He have
felt that some of the Black students1 work and planning is
also worthy of being considered for limited academic credit*
Please rest assured that wm will not grant any grades at
