After 14 months of
employment in the
Housekeeping Department here
I've'tinally realized that things
are not what they seem.
Guilford College may promote
its Quaker image, but in its
dealings with the Housekeeping
Department here it definitely
isn't Quakerly.
Specific complaints with
Guilford College's dealings with
the Housekeeping Department
include racism, deception in the
hiring of C.O.'s, and an
unwillingness to discuss
reasonable requests for changes
in policy.
The racial discrimination is
not open and overt and
therefore not subject to
elimination through legal means.
Rather it is a subtle attitude that
the blacks here are something a
little bit less than intelligent, not
quite as human, perhaps, as the
administration and therefore no
need exists to accord them
human dignity. They have no
voice concerning their work
schedules, work loads or supplies
used in their work. Any
complaints are met either with
open hostility or are ignored
totally.
In a recent attempt to change
policy on work schedules the
assistant business manager put
off a requested meeting more
than a week, then showed up
unexpectedly one morning when
two members of the department
were not there, listened to the
suggested changes, spouted a few
pleasantries and left. This is just
the most recent example of a
policy of "keeping them singing
down on the farm but don't
treat them like people, i equal to,
