It sll began three years asm when Pat was a Juntas- at Clyde Irwln High school in Ashevlue. N. C. Tex Beneke and his band were In Ashevllle for a week play-ing for a big automobile diowing. Fat, who has always been Inter-ested In singing, went backstage and met him. They discussed her vocal talents, ahe sang a number for him. and he asked her right away to go on tour with his band. Pat's mother frowned on the Idea as Pat was still in high school snd only sixteen at the time. The matter was dropped then, and Pat thought no more of It until this past fall when she was Invited down to Duke for the "Shoe 'n Slipper" week-end and learned when she went up to say "Hello" and asked for her address. Then, a week before our Christ-mas holidays, she walked out of Psychology class to find Dean regular vocalist had left, and he asked Pat to fly .lov.n and Join the band on It's tour. Our by now excited Pat went home, discussed it wlu» her par-ents, and shortly thereafter found herself in Texas on tour with a famous-name band. They toured •" °' the western and south-western tsates. stopping for a big engagement at the "Sands" in Las Vegas P*t tUrt«1 «nflng when she was three, so she can remembe.- no tune when she hasn't sung Starling out with folk ballads, she's hss her own radio and TV shows In Ashevllle. She has also «ung occasionally with Woody Herman and Billy May. and last year graced our own campus as soloist for the Elliott Hsll chorus.
