The nominations for Homecoming queen were: Courtney Canter-Alpha Delta Pi, Ariel Gray-Spartan Orientation Staff, Erica Lawrence-Campus Activities Board and Laura Nelson-Alpha Chi Omega. The nominations for Homecoming king were: Deryle Daniels - Alpha Phi Alpha, Joshua Lamb - Lambda Chi Alpha and Gerson Sanchez - the Residence Hall Association. SGA President Katie Marshall announced each nominee and Chancellor Linda Brady crowned the winners. Erica Lawrence · won 'the title of queen and Gerson_ SJUlchez was elected to kinghood. Chancellor Brady crowned each winner with their tespective , crowns, a smilem1d,a hug. Senior Gerson Sanchez replaced Mkllae usO, iast year~king. Sanchez-.is & communications major With a · French minor. He i~ a resident ad~isor and an orientation leader. Sanchez plays piano for both the Gospel Choir and Divi)le Harmony. He is a member of Spanish American Latino Student Association . (SALSA) and he founded Latino's Organized Under Distinction Commuter Deli feeds hungry students Shonte Hodnett Staff Writer Last Tuesday, UNCG commuter students met in the Elliot University Center's Cone Ball room to take advantage of the 2nd Commuter Deli from llam- 2pm. Campus Activities and Programs sponsored the events and UNCG Dining Services provided food and beverages. The Commuter Deli is offered three times throughout each semester. During those times, the deli provides an opportunity for students living off campus to meet other off campus students and get information about campus programs and services that they may have otherwise overlooked. Information booths surrounded the room to further promote events like Homecoming and new initiatives on campus. The Commuter Deli was a hit SEE DELl, PAGE 2 SIERRA DENNIS/THE CAROLINIAN Sanchez and tawrence immediately after the crowning ceremony. ,. (LOUD). Sanchez said that he campaigned together with Ariel Gray. Collectively, they created their slogan "Vote Smart, Vote Short:' He used his sponsor-ship to his advantage and got the Residence Hall Association to email every dorm informing them of the contest and advertising himself. "I could access 4500 students;' Sanchez said, "and a lot of freshman wanted to feel involved:' He used Facebok and Twitter sending out messages "2-3 times a daY:' Jokingly, Sanchez said, "I exploited my Facebook:' On stage, Sanchez said that he "started getting nervous, there were so many people. In my mind, I'd lost. They called my name and I was like no way:' When accepting the crown he said that he wanted to "be polite as possible;' making sure to shake everyone's hand. Junior Erica Lawrence gracefully took the title away from Danielle Mizerak. Lawrence is a marketing major with a minor in communications. She is involved in Campus Activities Board and is the marketing chair for the UNCG Circle K group. She is also a community service senator for SGA and a member of the Black Student Union. She said that she used Facebook and Twitter heavily in her campaign. She said she - emailed "all of my classmates and sent out a mass message to CAB;' and "I went to the Tate Street coffee and sandwich shops and met a lot of people:' When asked about the moment she heard her name called out, she said, "I was completely shocked, I'm still shocked:' "I am glad I ran for Homecoming Queen. It deepened my relationship with my friends on the SEE HOMECOMING PAGE 2 Phi Beta Sigma hosts Homecoming talent s-how Holly Driggers Staff Writer One of the highlights of last week's UNCG homecoming was the Sigma Blue Night talent show that took place on Thursday evening. At 7:15 p.m., the line to get into the EUC Auditorium ext~ nded past the coffee shop. Lasting nearly three hours; the talent show was hosted by Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Inc. The organization was founded in 1988 and is responsible for founding the chapter of the NAACP on UNCG's campus. The event was also sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) which promotes a positive environment for student involvement. Two emcees acted as hosts, Darren Brand and Anthony B, and also doubled as comedic entertainment for the evening. Divine Harmony, a vocal performing arts group, opened the show with a riveting performance of our Nationa.l Anthem. The members of Divine Harmony strive to inspire people through their uplifting words _ SIERRA DENNIS/THE CAROLINIAN The brothers Phi Beta Sigma introduce the talent show Thursday evening. as well as songs. The group became a part of the UNCG family in January. One student told a touching story through the vocal performance of Smokie Norful's 'I Need You Now; leaving an emotional audience. Brand and Anthony B transitioned with a comedic bit between each performer - keeping the audience engaged and energetic throughout the night. Other performers included the Hip-Hop group· 'Chocolate City' who performed an original piece called 'Hometown; sampling the chorus from British singer-songwriter Adele's 'Hometown Glory.' A performance by 'Popular Strangers' followed who, with their catchy hooks and head-nodding beats, were a sure hit.
