James Nichols News Editor As the UNCG community begins · the second semester of this school year, Katie Marshall is passing the halfway point of her term as Student Body President. Over the past semester, she has attempted to amplify the student voice while dealing with anumber of issues, including expan.: sion, budget cuts, and the controversial restructuring of academic departments. "For this semester I'd just like to continue where we started last semester;' said Marshall. ''I'd like to do more talking to students and seeing what they're interested in." Marshall repeatedly stressed how important it is to her that the studeQt voice is being heard in all decision-making processes. "When students ask 'what does SGA do; its more of what do you want SGA to do. I try to ask students what ~ey'd like to see chahged ·or done on campus:' Marshall stressed that one of the biggest challenges Ul'JCG is going to face in the upcoming semester is that of massive bud-get cuts for the University. The .. cuts will more then likely result in tuition increases for students and cuts for various programs and departments. "It's a delicate balance of keeping the school competitive and relevant but also making sure that it's affordable;' said Marshall. "From everything I've seen this semester, the administration is fully in support of hearing the student input. There is much more student responsibility than initially received:' There are three specific areas of student concern that Marshall said she will focus on improving throughout this second half of her presidency:~ financial aid, advising, and parking, "Those~ are the 3 big things rve heard a · ~ot about this year;' said Marshall. Advising will be one of Marshall's top prior~ties after much of the student body encountere4 nut; n~rous problems involving registration and advisi~g ~t the end of last semester. SGA hosts·first ."Great T-Shirt Exchange" Ervin, had an idea for an event where students could trade in old t-shirts representing big-name North Carolina colleges for a shirt displaying their UNCG pride. It was an effort to generate school spirit and encourage UNCG students to develop a focus and pride for the college they attend. The event also sought ·to dispel the idea that UNCG spirit isn't as strong as that at colleges wh:h large sports teams. The clothing collected tlM-ough the event was then donated to Greensboro Urban Ministries. Page7 James Nichols News Editor On December 6, 2010, the Student Government Association held its first "Great T-Shirt Exchange:' The event sought to inspire school spirit while also . collecting clothing from students to donate to charity. At the exchange, students were encouraged to donate T-shirts from other colleges for a free shirt showing support for UNCG. The shirt incorporated the primary colors of other colleges around North Carolina, such a~ Duke, N.C. State, and UNC-Chapel Hill. . Plans for the exchange began last summer when_Presi_dent Ka- · tie Marshall met with the Spartan Spirit Rising committee. A member of the Blue Crew, Bi:ittany Stuart Barefoot details the progress of Women's athletics and an unbeatable streak Page 16 The event was made possible by means of a . Campus Innovation Grant from the Association of Student Governments. The grant, paired with University Relations, enabled the mass amount of UNCG shirts to be printed at no cost to students.
