Outside Alumni House, just off College Avenue, a construction crew works in the heat, trying to enhance the building. Not far down that same road, another crew works through the day in front of Petty Science Building. Five renovations are presently underway across campus. Construction is being done to Aycock Auditorium, Alumni House, Brown Music Building, McNutt Building and Petty Science Building. With the exception of Alumni House, where construction started last February, renovations began in September of 2006. The work continues almost a year later. According to Nathan Morris, a senior theater major, campus construction is nothing new. "This is my fifth year at UNCG. Every year there has been some sort of construc-tion taking place," he said. Morris explained that since he has at-tended the university the Department of Theater has moved buildings a number of times. However, despite the construction, Morris said he keeps a positive view. "I don't think it takes away focus from education," he explained. "I just like to think there are legitimate reasons for the renovations." According to the UNCG Facilities De-sign and Construction website the reasons are legitimate and necessary, entailing re-placement of plumbing, electrical and me-chanical systems, among other things, in most of the buildings. Some repairs, like those of McNutt Building, are needed in order to meet building code and American with Dis-abilities Act requirements. Other renovations, namely those to Ay-cock Auditorium, simply include modern-ization. The auditorium's upgrades are to include "new seating, better sight lines, an orchestra pit, and a much needed expan-sion of the back of the house," according to the website. Major renovations have been under-way since 1984, when what the university termed its first "Master Plan" went into ef-fect The plan was updated in 2001 and is to be updated again in the near future. In addition to the renovations to the different academic buildings, there is con-struction underway to roads. Gray Drive at Ragsdale-Mendenhall Dorm is to be re-paved soon, possibly causing one-way or closed traffic in the area. Students shouldkeep these construction alertsin mindwhen drivingthrough cam-pus.
