UNCG Digital Collections : University History Collections : State Normal Magazine and Coraddi : About

About the publications:

Starting with its first issue on March 15, 1897, State Normal Magazine was a quarterly publication primarily concerned with presenting news about the State Normal and Industrial College (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro). State Normal Magazine also featured editorials, alumnae news, and literary essays, the latter a reflection of the Cornelian and Adelphian (and later, the Dikean) societies which were its sponsors. The first managing editor was faculty member Mary M. Petty, who supervised three editors each from the Cornelian and Adelphian societies.

In 1919, as the State Normal and Industrial College became the North Carolina College for Women, there was a realignment among the campus publications. The yearbook was renamed Pine Needles and its former name, The Carolinian, was applied to the new, weekly student newspaper. With new publications The Carolinian and Alumnae News assuming most of State Normal Magazine's role as a news publication, the magazine took on a primarily literary and fine arts focus which it retains to the present day. State Normal Magzine also took on a new name, Coraddi, derived from the names of the three societies that now sponsored it: Cornelian, Adelphian, and Dikean.

Frequency of publication has varied through the years, from annual to quarterly. One issue from the 1970-1971 academic year was never published and exists only as a box of archival material held by the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives. For many years, an annual Arts Forum issue was published. The magazine has also employed a variety of formats and sizes. Now in its 113th year, Coraddi remains a student publication which, according to its Fall 2010 issue "represents the art and literary community of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro."

About the project:

The full run of State Normal Magazine and Coraddi were digitized in 2010 under the supervision of the Digital Projects Unit of UNCG University Libraries and the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives. Digitization was complted through the facilities of the Internet Archive as part of a Sloan Foundation Grant administered through Lyrasis' Mass Digitization Collaborative.

Files are presented on this site as fully text-searchable PDF (portable document format) files. The accompanying document description for each file contains a link to a correspoinding page at the Internet Archive where the user may access that issue in a variety of other formats as well.

The site is hosted by UNCG University Libraries' Electronic Resources and Information Technology department using CONTENTdm software.
